Poor Condition in Some Old Condominiums in Kota Kinabalu

From what I notice, there are some old buildings in Kota Kinabalu that were built some 20 years ago and the condition is really worrying.  Apparently, the contractors used sea sand to contruct the building and because of it, there is a lot of cracks and blistering on the walls and ceiling due to the rusting of the steel inside the concrete.

I didn't know how serious it was until I talked to an engineer friend who had helped to access the condition of the Hospital Queen tower block which was subsequently declared unsafe.  I have seen the same problem in many buildings in KK including a few of the shophouses in Gaya Street.

The point is what is the local authority doing to ensure safety of occupants of such buildings?

  1. I am very concerned about this as many people have told me to be careful. I thought of renting a condominium called Colonades but many people tell me that it is in bad condition and many tenants and owners have moved out of the Colonades Condominium units.

  2. How about you write on the colonades and perhaps some others will share their experiences? I need to move out of my temporary unit soon and I need to make a decision.

    Thanks for your help.

  3. My family moved out of Colonades Condominium last year. Just couldn't take it anymore. Ceiling cracks and drop concrete pieces all the time. Walls and floors also crack.

We keep patching every two or three months. Looks like a serious problem so we moved out for safety considerations. Many people have done so. So becareful if you are going anywhere near the colonades.

  4. I have a friend who used to stay in Colonades and every day the wife would complain of the house condition. Falling concrete and leaking pipes is the norm.

They finally moved to Jesselton Condominium which they said is like moving to a dream place compared to the Colonades. I heard the owner is fed up too and trying to sell of the unit but it's not easy to sell the units here.

So be careful as they would try to push to expatiates who have no know\ledge.

  5. Yah, unfortunately an expatriate is easy meat. At least to some people. When I first came back they thought that since I had been away so I was almost conned!

Not good for Malaysia's image. we must be fair to those who come here.
